Having featured in the tabloids relatively recently, the reason why autism is being reported extensively is because greater understanding is wanted by the general public. But some of these news stories may have passed you by.

What is autism?

When a person has a learning difficulty and autistic disorder, it is with them for life. Those with autism have difficulty in understanding the world that surrounds them. Autism does not affect a person in a set way but in other ways. People with autism are more than capable of living a rewarding and dependant life, but consideration must be taken when knowing how to interact with this type of person.

How does autism affect someone?

Having autism means that a person interprets colour, touch, sense and smell differently, and they may over-experience or under-experience these. It is reported that Jimmy Hendrix, who taught the world how to play guitar, was autistic and this may explain why his playing is extraordinarily good as the sounds he produced were far better than anything which his then-contemporaries were producing.

Are there many forms of autism?

Autism affects a person in many ways but if they have Asperger syndrome this has further consequences on the persons’ life.  Those with Asperger syndrome are normally more intelligent than able-bodied people, but they may have trouble understanding language and the spoken word.

What other problems does having autism cause?

As the brain of the person who has autism has difficulty deciphering the many messages which it receives every second of the day, there is a tendency for people with autism to become confused. They may also have trouble with social communication and making life-long friends.

Are there any physical impairments to having autism?

Unlike those with other learning difficulties and autistic disorder, there is no physical difference between a person who has autism to someone who doesn’t. As autism is not often diagnosed until people are in adulthood and beyond, autistic adults are often described as being difficult and children to be naughty, which is what they have been doing for generations.

Greater understanding and earlier diagnosis of autism means that the person receives the care and attention they need in order for their lives to fully progress. Having autism needn’t be the end of the world, but without this help and medical opinion being given early in their lives, this causes further problems and issues.
